In Iowa, Liquor Licenses are address-specific, so we have to apply for a temporary license for each event we serve at that requires a Liquor License.
If your event is being held on private property, such as your home or business, and your event is not open to the public, and all beverages are complimentary, no license is necessary. Note - all 3 of those conditions must be applicable to avoid the license requirement.
If your event is not being held on property you own, a license is required if you would like Spirits served (whether complimentary or not), and a license is always required any time alcohol is for sale.
If your event is open to the public, a license is required, regardless of what is being served, and if it is complimentary.
If you are serving complimentary beer, wine, seltzers, and canned cocktails with an ABV less than 6.25%, no license is required!
Yes! This is a great way to save money on your bar services, however, there are some rules that apply:
You will need to obtain a Dramshop insurance policy, so check with your insurance agent for the availability and cost of that.
Beer and seltzers must be purchased from a local distributor; as a license holder, you can’t purchase beer or seltzers from a retail establishment, such as a grocery store.
Wine can be purchased from any retail location, up to 1 case (12 bottles) per day.
Spirits can be purchased from any retail location as well.
