Planning an event comes with a lot of decisions, and choosing how you'll handle the bar is one of them.
Do you want guests to pay for their own drinks? Would you rather host the bar? Should you purchase alcohol ahead of time? What about drink tickets?
There isn't one right answer for every event. The best option depends on your guest list, budget, event style, and how much control you want over what is served.
At Your Private Bar, we offer several different bar service options so you can choose what works best for your celebration.
Cash Bar
With a cash bar, your guests pay for their own drinks.
This is a great option if you want to provide a full bar experience without covering the cost of everyone's drinks. Guests can order what they'd like and pay individually at the bar.
A cash bar can be a good fit for:
- Weddings where guests are comfortable purchasing their own drinks
- Fundraisers and community events
- Corporate events
- Large celebrations where the host wants to control their overall bar expense
If you choose a cash bar, there are additional requirements and fees associated with the service, including applicable liquor licensing and insurance requirements.
Hosted Bar
Want to treat your guests without committing to a predetermined amount of alcohol?
A hosted bar may be the right option.
With our hosted bar service, we run a tab throughout the event based on the drinks actually served. Each drink is individually priced and added to the tab.
At the end of the event, you can either pay the tab that night or be billed afterward.
One of the biggest benefits of this option is flexibility. Instead of paying a flat per-person price, you're paying for the drinks that are actually served.
Choose Your Drink Tier
With a hosted bar, you can select the level of drinks you'd like available to your guests.
You can choose:
- A specific beer tier
- A specific wine tier
- A specific spirits tier
- A combination of options
- Or a custom drink menu
This allows you to create a bar that fits your event and your budget.
Pre-Paid Hosted Product
Another option is purchasing alcohol from us by the case before the event.
With this option, you'll determine how many cases of each selected product you'd like, and those are the products we'll serve at your event.
This can be a good choice if you want to know your alcohol costs ahead of time and have more control over exactly what is available.
You can also add a cash bar option if you'd like guests to be able to purchase additional drinks.
Drink Tickets
Drink tickets provide another way to control your event's bar spending.
You purchase a predetermined number of drink tickets, and guests use those tickets to purchase drinks at the bar.
This gives you a set amount to budget while still allowing your guests to choose what they'd like to drink within the ticket's value.
Drink tickets can be especially helpful for:
- Corporate events
- Fundraisers
- Open houses
- Graduation parties
- Events where you want to provide a limited number of hosted drinks
What About a Custom Drink Menu?
You don't necessarily have to offer every option available at a full bar.
Creating a custom drink menu can be a fun way to personalize your event while keeping your selections manageable.
For example, you could offer:
🍺 Two beer selections
🍷 Two wines
🍸 Three spirits
🍹 One signature cocktail
A custom menu can also give your event more personality. Your signature cocktail could be named after the couple, incorporate your wedding colors, or reflect the theme of your event.
So... Which Option Is Right for You?
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
Do you want to pay for your guests' drinks?
If yes, consider a hosted or pre-paid option.
Do you want your bar budget to be predetermined?
Pre-paid product or drink tickets may be a good fit.
Do you want guests to pay for their own drinks?
A cash bar may be the simplest option.
Do you want complete control over what's served?
A pre-paid product option or custom drink menu gives you more control.
Do you want flexibility based on what guests actually drink?
A hosted tab allows you to pay based on actual consumption.
There's No One-Size-Fits-All Bar
The right bar service isn't necessarily the one your friend used at their wedding or the package you saw online.
Your guest count, event length, budget, venue, and guest preferences all play a role.
That's why we like to talk through the options with our clients and help them figure out what makes the most sense for their event.
Whether you're planning a wedding, corporate event, birthday, fundraiser, graduation, or just a really good party, the goal is the same:
Make the bar work for your event—not the other way around. 🥂
