Cooking With Spirits: Bourbon Candied Bacon Deviled Eggs

Deviled eggs are a classic appetizer that’s loved by many, but if you’re looking to elevate this timeless dish, you’re in for a treat. This recipe takes traditional deviled eggs and adds a mouthwatering twist with the smoky, sweet, and savory flavors of maple bacon and a hint of bourbon. Whether you’re hosting a brunch, a holiday gathering, or just want to impress your guests, these Bourbon-Infused Maple Bacon Deviled Eggs are sure to be a hit.

Ingredients

For the Bacon:

- 2 tablespoons brown sugar

- 3/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard

- 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup

- 1/8 teaspoon salt

- 2 teaspoons bourbon (optional)

- 4 thick-sliced bacon strips

For the Deviled Eggs:

- 12 hard-boiled large eggs

- 3/4 cup mayonnaise

- 1 tablespoon maple syrup

- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

- 1/4 teaspoon pepper

- 1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle pepper

- Minced fresh chives (for garnish)

Directions

  1. Prepare the Maple Bourbon Bacon:

   - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

   - In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, Dijon mustard, maple syrup, and salt. If you want to add a deeper flavor profile, stir in the bourbon.

   - Coat the bacon strips evenly with the brown sugar mixture, making sure each strip is fully covered.

   - Place the coated bacon on a rack set inside a foil-lined baking pan. This setup ensures that the bacon crisps up beautifully while the fat drips away.

   - Bake the bacon for 25-30 minutes, or until it reaches your desired level of crispiness. Keep an eye on it, as the sugar can cause the bacon to burn quickly.

   - Once done, remove the bacon from the oven and let it cool completely. The bacon will harden as it cools, making it easier to chop finely.

  1. Prepare the Deviled Eggs:

   - Carefully cut the hard-boiled eggs in half lengthwise and remove the yolks. Set the whites aside on a serving platter.

   - In a small bowl, mash the egg yolks until they are smooth and free of lumps.

   - Add the mayonnaise, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, pepper, and ground chipotle pepper to the yolks. Stir until the mixture is creamy and well-combined.

   - Finely chop the cooled bacon, and fold half of it into the egg yolk mixture. This adds a delightful crunch and bursts of flavor throughout the filling.

   - Spoon or pipe the egg yolk mixture into the reserved egg whites. Using a piping bag with a star tip will give your deviled eggs a professional and attractive look.

  1. Garnish and Serve:

   - Sprinkle the remaining chopped bacon over the top of the filled eggs for added texture and flavor.

   - Finish with a sprinkle of minced fresh chives for a pop of color and a hint of freshness.

   - Cover and refrigerate the deviled eggs until you’re ready to serve them. They can be made a few hours ahead of time, making them a convenient option for entertaining.

Tips and Variations

- Bourbon-Free Option: If you prefer to skip the bourbon, the recipe will still be delicious without it. The maple syrup and brown sugar provide plenty of sweetness and depth.

- Spicy Kick: For those who love a bit of heat, consider adding a dash of hot sauce or increasing the amount of chipotle pepper in the yolk mixture.

- Alternative Bacon: Try using turkey bacon or a plant-based bacon alternative for a different twist on this recipe.
